Slows the absorption of Carboh­ydrates form the GI tract

Indication

Can be used in patients with Type 1 or 2 Diabetes

Contra­ind­ica­tions

Do not give to patients with inflam­matory or malabs­orption GI disorder
 

Admini­str­ation

Must be given with first bite of meal... no food=no med
PO (does not need to be taken with meals)

Nursing Interv­entions

Monitor CBC, A1C, & LFTs
Must use glucose tablets for hypogl­ycemia

GI distress
Pancyt­openia
Hepato­tox­icity
 

Normal lab values

A1C
<6.5 = diabetic goal
CBC
Platelet = 150-400 WBC = 4-11, HCT 36-51, Hgb = 12-17
LFTs
AST = 10-40, ALT = 7-56
