Research methods - reliability validity and generalisability
This is a draft cheat sheet. It is a work in progress and is not finished yet.
Pilot studies
Pilot study |
A pilot study is a small-scale trial run of a research design before doing the real thing it is in order to find out if certain aspects of the design do or don't work |
|
Reliability
Reliability |
Reliability refers to how consistent the results are. If an experiment is highly reliable if it is repeated again the same results will be collected |
|
|
Validity
Internal validity |
The extent to which the researcher measures what they intended to measure |
Ecological validity |
The extent to which the research findings can be generalised to other settings |
Historical/temporal validity |
The extent to which a research findings can be generalised to other time periods |
Population validity |
The extent to which a research findings can be generalised to other groups of people |
|
|
Generalisability
Generalisability |
The extent to which you can apply the findings of a particular study to other groups of people settings or to a different time period |
