Imperfect Tense in Finnish and changes

This is a draft cheat sheet. It is a work in progress and is not finished yet.

VT 1

Add i behind u, y, o, ö for verbs ending in uä, yä, öä, oa
Sanon -> sanoin
Remove -e/-ä then add -i for verbs ending in -ea,-eä, ää
Säässtän -> säästin
For 2 syllable words that have an a in both syllables, replace a in the 2nd syllable with oi
Maksan -> maksoin
Verbs ending in -ltaa, -ltää, rtaa, rtää, ntaa, ntää (VV taa/VV tää) one letter (a/ä) removed then add -si
Lennän -> lensin
STRONG: basic form, Hän, he
weak: minä, sinä, me, te

General rule is
O, ö , u, y STAY
A,ä, e, I REMAIN
2 syllable words both with a change to o
EXCEPT­IONS: ltää/itaa, ntaa/ntää, rtaa, rtää -> remove 2 letters before personal ending, replace with -si
Verbs: kieltää, kääntää, rakentaa, työntää, siirtää, piirtää, huutaa, löytää, pyytää, tuntea, tietää, taitaa
Kielsin, käänsin, rakensin, työnsin, siirsin, piirsin, huusin, löysin­,py­ysin, tunsin, tiesin, taisin

Imperfekti

To express a task that has started in the past and now completely over/f­inished

VT 2

1 of the long vowels go away, then add i
Syön - > söin
Yö -> öi
Juon -> join
Uo -> oi
Vien -> vein
Ie -> ei
Saan -> sain
VV -> Vi
Myyn -> myin
Jään -> jäin
Verbs that end in Ida look the same
voin -> voin
EXCEPT­IONS: nähdä, tehdä, käydä
Näin, tein, kävin
Näit, teit, kävit
Näki, teki, kävi
Näimme, teimme, kävimme
Näitte, teitte, kävitte
Näkivät, tekivät, kävivät

VT 3

Replace -e at the end with -i
Opiskelen -> opiskelin
In 3rd person singular (Hän), both ee disappear opiskelin -> opiskeli
STRONG: minä, sinä, Hän, me, te, he
weak: basic

VT 4

Replace last 2 letters before personal ending with -si
Tapaan -> tapasin
STRONG: minä, sinä, Hän, me, te, he
weak: basic

VT 5

Replace -e with -i
Häiritsen -> häiritsin

VT 6

Replace -e with -i
Vanhenen -> vanhenin
STRONG: minä, sinä Hän, me, te, he
Weak: basic
