medications for fibromyalgia: Pregabalin, Minacipipran, Duloxetine, Amitriptyline, Sertraline

Pregabalin (Lyrica)

Action: decrease pain
SE: dizziness, drowsi­ness, weight gain, altered vision
Consid­era­tio­ns/­tea­ching: w/out food, do not stop taking suddenly, do not crush or chew. Avoid alcohol
Know how medication effects pt. Seizure history?

Amitri­ptyline

Action: antide­pre­ssant effect
SE: dizziness, dry mouth, drowsi­ness, orthos­tatic hypote­nsion, headache, increased appetite, weight gain, nausea, fatigue
Consid­era­tio­ns/­tea­ching: Rise slowly from lying to standing. Therap­eutic effect make take 2-4 weeks. Photos­ens­itivity may occur. Do not stop abruptly, avoid activities requiring alertness.

Duloxetine (Cymbalta)

Action: produces antide­pre­ssant effect
SE: dry mouth, consti­pation, insomnia, dizziness, fatigue, diarrhea
Consid­era­tio­ns/­tea­ching: Therap­eutic effect may take 1-4 weeks. Do not abruptly stop. Avoid task requiring alertness. Inform HCP of intended pregnancy. Monitor BP before admini­ste­ring.

Sertraline

Action: relives depression
SE: H/A, nausea, dry mouth, diarrhea, insomnia, fatigue, rash
Consid­era­tio­ns/­tea­ching: Take w/food if nausea occurs. Avoid activities requiring alertness. Inform HCP if pregnancy occurs
