Defini­tions

Prevalence rate: how frequently a disorder exists within a popula­tion.
Incidence: the number of new cases diagnosed in a certain period of time within a popula­tion, often reported over a 12-month period.
Lifetime prevalence: the proportion of a population that at some point in life has ever had the disorder.

survey on their daily life and depressive episodes - focus on important biogra­phical details, ie. particular life events or particular diffic­ulties. These events were later rated in severity by indepe­ndent resear­chers.
Result
8% (37) became clinically depressed in the previous year. 33 (nearly 90%) experi­enced an adverse life event or a serious difficulty (e.g. loss of a loved one, abusive relati­ons­hip). Only 30% of the women who did not become depressed suffered from such adversity.
