Astrology basics Cheat Sheet (DRAFT) by

Wondering what the hell a rising sign is? Wanna find out what a retrograde does? Curious about why people believe the stars dictate fate? Well look no further! In this astrology 101 I cover all of the above and more.

This is a draft cheat sheet. It is a work in progress and is not finished yet.

What is astrology?

According to Oxford languages Astrology is the study of the movements and relative positions of celestial bodies interpreted as having an influence on human affairs and the natural world.

According to the Cambrige Dictionary Astrology is the study of the movements and positions of the sun, moon, planets, and stars in the belief that they affect the character and lives of people

According to my mother, Astrology is a bunch of nonsense.

But just because we believe in different things doesn’t mean we can’t treat each other with respect.

How did astrology come to be?

According to Brittanica it originated in Mesopotamia (c. 3rd millennium bc) and spread to India, but it developed its Western form in Greek civilization during the Hellenistic period. Astrology entered Islamic culture as part of the Greek tradition and was returned to European culture through Arabic learning during the Middle Ages.

Some of the earliest evidence dates back to 3rd millennium BCE. UNESCO reckons that people started the very first concepts of astrology when they first observed astronomical cycles.

The practice was considered an academic discipline* right up to the 17th century across much of Eurasia.

Why do people believe in Astrology?

The original purpose of astrology was to inform the individual of the course of their life on the basis of the positions of the planets and of the zodiacal signs (the 12 astrological constellations) at the moment of their birth or conception.

Astrology, like religion, brings a sense of certainty to the constant uncertainty of life. Life is often chaotic and unfair and astrology bringing in the concept of fate is rather similar to the idea that everything happens for a reason.

Many spiritualists believe that you chose your life path before you were born so that your soul can not only learn from it but settle karmic debts. These people also tend to subscribe to the belief of reincarnation and past lives.

Astrology is also part of certain religions like new age spirituality, Taoism and neo-paganism. But anyone can believe in astrology, some people don’t take it all that seriously while others consider it a way of life.

What are the Elements?

In Western tropical astrology, there are 12 astrological signs. Each of the four elements is associated with three signs of the Zodiac, which are always located exactly 120 degrees away from each other along the ecliptic and said to be in trine with one another. Most modern astrologers use the four classical elements extensively, (also known as triplicities), and indeed it is still viewed as a critical part of interpreting the astrological chart.

The four elements are as follows: Fire, Earth, Air and Water. Always in said order. Repeated throughout the year, the pattern stays the same.
