- Note the Age of the patient:
> Young: Newborns/Neonatal jaundice
> Middle ages/ Elderly
> Female: Pregnancy (HELLP Syndrome: (hemolysis, elevated liver enzyme levels, and low platelet levels))
HPC
- When did this start? How long has it been?
- Did this start suddenly or gradually?
- Did you notice this or someone else?
- Where was it noticed first? On your eyes or skin?
- Do you notice your pee or poop changing color? more darker or poop more pale?
- Do you have any skin itching? (obstructive jaundice)
- Do you have tummy pain? Do you feel more warmer (fever)? Do you feel generally weak? (consider ascending cholangitis)
- Do you notice your clothes being bigger, like yuve lost weight? |
Paed Hx
- What is the mother and child's individual blood type
- Did the mother have any infection during pregnancy? (TORCH, strep infection) sore throat, skin sores
- Difficulty in delivery (cephalhematoma)
- Feeding- number of times/day, newborns every 2 hrs
- Activity of child at birth |
HDA
Many drugs can cause jaundice such as:
> Flucloxacillin, Augmentin, Isoniazid, rifampicin(TB), Oral contraceptive pill, Steroids, Paracetamol (overdose), Herbal meds
- Any allergies? |

- Jaundice/maternal risk factors for viral jaundice
- Has any one in your family ever been told by a doctor to have cancer of their tummy organs
- Does anyone in your family or community have similar problems? |
SH
- Are you married? Do you have children?
- Do you have any partners? Do you practice safe sex by using condoms {ensure}?
- What do you do for work?
> Health care workers: needle stick injury
> Sewage workers: Leptospirosis
- Do you smoke?
- Do you drink alcohol?
- Do you use any IV needle drugs
- Did you recently travel anywhere around the country or overseas? |
