Key Terms and Concepts

Unhome­liness
Lack of connection with one and one’s home. The word does not necess­arily have to refer to literal “home,” but rather can refer to emotional discon­nec­tion. Ex. I felt unhomely when I returned to my hometown and realized that all my neighbors left the town.
Exile
Forcibly being absent from a society or a group such as country or home. The word does not necess­arily have to refer to a specific “place,” but rather can refer to forced emotional exclusion.
Connection
A sense of being related to something.
Identity
The way individual or group define oneselves.
Syncretism
Combin­ation of two or more different beliefs, religions, or practices without abandoning any specific culture. Ex. As one nation colonized the other, the colony was forced to syncretize their cultures.
Hegemony
Dominance in power, control, or importance by one country over the other country or a group of people. Ex. Country A enjoyed its hegemony over Country B.
Othering
Believing an individual or a group of people signif­icantly different and alien from themse­lves. Othering involves two concepts: “Exotic Other” and “Demonic Other.”
Mimicry
The colonized one changing their cultures to that of colonizer.
