non specific defenses

innate immunity
defenses present at birth. no memory response. includes first and second line defenses
adaptive immunity
third line defense. not born with it it changes with experience (has memory)
 

first line defences: physical

skin
closely packed cells, shedding, dryness (at risk when surface is broken)
mucous membrane
cilia pushes microbes out, secrete mucous
lacrimal apparatus
eye protec­tion, tears wash surface of eyes, act as wind shield wipers
saliva
dilute and wash teeth and oral membranes
other physical factors
epiglo­ttis- protects respir­atory tract from saliva/ microbes from mouth
 

first line of defense: chemical

sebum
oily substance from sebaceous glands
perspi­ration
eliminates wastes and flushes microbes from skin
earwax
secretes rich fatty acids
saliva
lysosome, urea, uric acid, IgA
gastric juice
protection from food particles
