System, Surrou­nding & Boundary

System : Quantity of matter or region in space which is under invest­igation
Surrou­ndings : Anything which is external to the system
Boundary : Interface shared by system & surrou­nding
Thickness of boundary is zero, hence there is no mass or volume
Boundary can be rigid or flexible

Types of Systems

Closed System / Control Mass System : Mass intera­ctions can't take place, but energy intera­ctions can take place.
Open System / Control Volume System : Energy & mass intera­ctions can take place.
Isolated System : Energy & mass intera­ctions can't take place

Thermo­dyn­amics Equili­brium

Two systems are said to be in thermo­dynamic equili­brium when they are in thermal, mechan­ical, chemical & phase equili­brium with each other.

Types of Property

Extensive Property : depends on the size of the system.
Intensive Property : indepe­ndent of the size of the system.
1. Ratio of two extensive properties is an intensive property
2. Specific properties are extensive properties per unit mass
3. Extensive properties are additive in nature, whereas intensive properties are not
