Changing party fortunes
Why was a national government formed?
 
Wall St. Crash led to the Labour govt. having to make unpopular cuts in 1931.
MacDonald expelled from party.
Announces he'll be PM of Nat. Gov. instead.
He had been persuaded by George V to stay for stability and patriotic duty.
 
But...
Health failing for MacDonald, Baldwin effect­ively became PM.
After MacDon­ald's resign­ation in 1935, Baldwin re-elected for third term. Rocky start with plan to appease fascist Italy.
Recovered popularity before stepping down in 1937.
He had advised Ed VIII to abdicate.
 
Chambe­rlain takes over...
He tried to appease Hitler. Hitler was bad. Chambe­rlain seen as foolish. Launched war, but slow start saw it dubbed 'Phoney War'. Replaced by Churchill, who had cross-­party backing.
 
Failure of extremism
Failure of Oswald Mosley to emulate the Italian fascist dictat­orship. Battle of Cable Street.
Failure of the CPGB- gained one MP in 1924, but with 0.4% of the vote, GB rejected communism.
