Spanish Stem-Changing Verbs. e:ie, o:ue, u:ue, e:i. Descubre 1 Chapter 4, Capítulo 4.

e:ie stem-c­hanging verbs

Begin with your infinitive
empezar
Chop off your ending to leave just the stem
empez-
Change the e in the last syllable of the stem to an ie
empiez-
Conjugate like normal
empezar
yo
empiezo
empiezas
él, ella, usted
empieza
nosotr­os/­nos­otras*
empezamos*
ellos, ellas, ustedes
empiezan
*The nosotr­os/­nos­otras form NEVER has a stem change.
Remember, e:ie stem-c­hanging verbs can be -ar, -er, OR -ir verbs, so conjugate the endings as necessary.
 

o:ue stem-c­hanging verbs

Begin with your infinitive
volver
Chop off your ending to leave just the stem
vol-
Change the o in the last syllable of the stem to a ue
vuelv-
Conjugate like normal
volver
yo
vuelvo
vuelves
él, ella, usted
vuelve
nosotr­os/­nos­otras*
volvemos*
ellos, ellas, ustedes
vuelven
*The nosotr­os/­nos­otras form NEVER has a stem change.
Remember, o:ue stem-c­hanging verbs can be -ar, -er, OR -ir verbs, so conjugate the endings as necessary.
 

u:ue stem-c­hanging verbs

Begin with your infinitive
jugar
Chop off your ending to leave just the stem
jug-
Change the u in the last syllable of the stem to a ue
jueg-
Conjugate like normal
jugar

juego
juegas
él, ella, usted
juega
nosotr­os/­nos­otras*
jugamos*
ellos, ellas, ustedes
juegan
*The nosotr­os/­nos­otras form NEVER has a stem change.
Jugar is the only verb in Spanish that has a u:ue stem change.
 

e:i stem-c­hanging verbs

Begin with your infinitive
pedir
Chop off your ending to leave just the stem
ped-
Change the e in the last syllable of the stem to an i
pid-
Conjugate like normal
pedir
yo
pido
pides
él, ella, usted
pide
nosotr­os/­nos­otras*
pedimos*
ellos, ellas, ustedes
piden
*The nosotr­os/­nos­otras form NEVER has a stem change.
e:i stem-c­hanging verbs can only be -ir verbs.
However, this does not mean every -ir verb that changes stem is an e:i stem-c­hanging verb, only that all e:i stem-c­hanging verbs happen to only be -ir verbs.
