alcohols:
the aliphatic organic compounds containing hydroxyl group -OH , as functional group are called alcohols.
 

types of alcohols

alcohols are divided on the basis of how many hydroxyl group they contain

1) monohydric alcohol:-
the alcohols containing one -OH group are called monohydric alcohols.

classi­fic­ation of monohydric alcohol:-
-->the monohydric alcohol are further classified into three types.

1) primary alcohol
2) secondary alcohol
3) tertiary alcohol


2) polyhydric alcohol:-
the alcohols containing two or more hydroxyl group are called polyhydric alcohols.
 

nomenc­lature of alcohols

 
there are two ways to name alcohol

1) common system of naming
2) IUPAC system

COMMON SYSTEM OF NAMING:-

in common system of naming , alcohols are named by adding the word alcohol after the name of the alkyl group to which -OH group is attached .

for example:-

1) C2H5OH ------­-> ethyl alcohol
2) C6H5CH2OH ------­-> benzyl alcohol.
