Accounts for 5% of childhood blindness

Prognosis

5-year survival 90%

Risk Factors

Dx by 5 y/o
Hereditary or non-he­red­itary (advanced paternal age)
 

Signs & Symptoms

Cat’s eye reflex / whitewash glow (leuko­coria)
Absent red reflex
Strabismus (late)
Erythema
Swelling

Diagno­stics

CT
MRI
Ophthalmic exam
- Under general anesthesia
Lumbar Puncture
Bone Marrow Aspiration
- Metastasis
 

Collab­orative Care & Meds

Surgical removal of eye
ABX ointment w/ dressing change

Nursing Interv­entions

Post-op care
- Large pressure dressing
- Observe for bleeding
- Sterile dressing changes (saline rinses, ABX ointment)
- High risk for mening­itis!

Education

Encourage eye check ups for remaining eye
Encourage genetic testing
Goggles during sports
No contact sports
Tx w/ eye infections
