あ-line (ends in 'a')
+nai/ない (negat­ive)

お-line (ends in 'o')
+u/う (let's form)

Type 1 Conjug­ation example

For a verb ending in u (arau/­あらう), the a-line will change to wa/わ and so the negative form will be arawan­ai/­あらわ­ない。

Drop the ru/る and add the ending to conjugate type 2 verbs.

These are conjugated using the type 1/godan verb rules.
